The Mid-Year 2024 Cool Down: Where the Live Business Is

This past week, Pollstar published its 2024 mid-year state of the live music industry, detailing the various positives and negatives. For every canceled tour (J.Lo, Black Keys, etc.), there has been numerous newly-minted stars who have broken through (Noah Kahan, Chappell Roan, Reneé Rapp, etc.) and emerged as hot ticket-sellers. Also, for every mega-fest with lower attendance (i.e, Coachella, Bonnaroo), there have been a dozen or more boutique fests that have popped off (Cruel World, Winter Jazz Fest, Movement Electronic, and so forth). Many executives that Pollstar spoke with are bullish on today's live industry. Six months in (Nov. 13, 2023 to May 15, 2024), the concert business hit a new, record-setting, mid-year total gross that crossed the $3 billion mark for the first time. Average attendance, however, is down 14.9% and average grosses have dipped 6.9%. Those decreases were countered by increases in average ticket prices (up 9.4%) and the volume of shows being up (16.7%).
