Stockholm’s Avicii Arena reopened for business last month following a year-long renovation project that significantly altered its interior. The renovation is a noteworthy endeavor for three reasons. Number one, it's a heritage-listed building. This means HOK, the architects tasked with the job, had to make planned changes and reinforcements with surgical precision so as not to affect the integrity of the building. Two, the desired innovations were achieved by using mostly off-the-shelf products that can be easily maintained and replaced, ensuring longevity. And, three, existing assets were repurposed, proving that a historic venue doesn't have to be torn down entirely to achieve the desired end result. Avicii Arena is operated by ASM Global's Stockholm Live and owned by the city of Stockholm, which commissioned HOK via the Swedish city's real estate department.
