U2 opened Las Vegas' Sphere venue with a spectacular live show and visual odyssey on the night of Sept. 29. The 336-foot-tall and 516-foot-wide Sphere is the largest spherical structure in the world, featuring the largest interior and exterior wraparound light-emitting diode (LED) displays. The 160,000-square-foot wraparound interior LED display supports 16K resolution imagery, while an immersive sound system from Germany-based Holoplot is calibrated with some 1,600 loudspeakers to deliver the experience to all seats. These technologies were used by U2 to debut their U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere residency before an estimated 18,000 attendees. The band's creative director Willie Williams used the LED display to showcase visual art that includes setting viewers in the desert and on the water, immersing them in collages and flashing text messages.
