Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee last week signed the ELVIS Act — officially the Ensuring Likeness, Voice and Image Security Act — into law, providing first-in-the-country safeguards for musicians against AI deepfakes and other abuses. The ELVIS Act adds artists’ voices and AI simulations of a recognizable voice to the state's four-decade-old Protection of Personal Rights law. It also provides district attorneys the ability to prosecute the unauthorized use thereof as a Class A misdemeanor. Finally, it allows individuals, their estates, and other rights-holders to seek civil damages. The new law becomes effective July 1.
