Two European soccer stadiums are enhancing stadium operations with battery storage systems to more effectively manage energy consumption. Arsenal's Emirates Stadium in London will get a phased battery storage system, following the summer installation of a system by Ajax at Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam. Onsite battery systems enable arena operators to store energy for discharge during times of peak usage and offset massive power draws from the local grid. This adds up to significant financial savings. StubHub Center in Los Angeles features a 2-megawatt battery system at the north end of the stadium that uses Tesla battery technology, and the stadium works with the Stem artificial intelligence smart energy solution provider to run algorithms on the optimal times to buy energy from the local grid, charge the battery system, and discharge the stored energy. "I'm sure for most venues, after labor, energy tends to be one of the more expensive single line items in the budget, and we are trying to figure out ways to reduce energy consumption and impact on the grid overall," says the StubHub Center's Adam Duvendeck. He adds that incentives, either federal or local, and subsidies help offset upfront costs and accelerate the time needed to recoup the outlay for U.S. venues.
