Spotify has just launched a proprietary website to sell live event tickets directly to consumers as a beta-test to determine if the model is viable. The Spotify Tickets website bills itself as "a destination for live events by creators audiences love, ticketed by Spotify." The service runs on the Freemium model, allowing subscribers to select their level of engagement. Broadway would likely gain a considerable windfall thanks to Spotify's vast subscription base, and extend itself to more potential theatergoers. The Spotify service could complicate things for flagship ticket sellers like Ticketmaster and Live Nation, which cannot afford to be marginalized in the convert business.
