The Scottish Event Campus (SEC) in Glasgow announced that it will remove single use plastic cups at live events through the introduction of reusable Stack Cups. This should save the campus 2 million cups annually and shrink its carbon footprint by 1,500 tons in the next decade. Stack Cups were initially unveiled at Planet Earth II at the OVO Hydro arena and used in seating areas, while the rest of the venue will use compostable versions. The nearby SEC Armadillo will use the cups at Ru Paul's Drag Race. Fans pay a £1 deposit for a Stack Cup at the bar when ordering their drink, and swap it for a clean cup on their next order. At the end of the night, they can either get their deposit back or put their cups in a collection bin to donate the deposit, which will cover the cost of the SEC's environmental and charitable projects. The announcement stated that the elimination of single use plastic cups marks a "key part of the SEC's journey towards net zero by 2030 as part of its wider sustainability strategy." SEC director of live entertainment Debbie McWilliams declared, "The SEC is committed to working towards a greener future for live events, and the removal of single use plastic cups in the OVO Hydro and SEC Armadillo is a huge step forward in our sustainability journey."
