Thousands of people gathered at San Francisco’s Civic Center on Jan. 17 to celebrate the life of Bob Weir, the legendary guitarist and founding member of the Grateful Dead, who passed away on Jan. 10 at the age of 78. Musicians Joan Baez and John Mayer gave heartfelt tribute speeches on a makeshift stage after four Buddhist monks opened the event with a prayer in Tibetan. Several fans placed long-stemmed red roses on an altar filled with photos and candles. Many wrote notes on colored paper, professing their love for Weir and his music and thanking him for his life's accomplishments. Fellow Grateful Dead founding members Jerry Garcia and Phil Lesh preceded him in death and were also prominently mentioned throughout.
