Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Darren Aronofsky will direct “Postcards from Earth,” the inaugural “experience” premiering at MSG's Sphere in Las Vegas this fall. “Sphere Experiences” such as Aronofsky's are designed as approximately hour-long productions that “utilize the full breadth of Sphere's technological capabilities to create a multi-sensory storytelling journey, providing audiences with a first-of-its-kind shared experience at an unparalleled scale,” according to an MSG press release in April. “Postcards from Earth” is slated to debut in October and is promoted as offering “a unique perspective on the magnificent beauty of life on Earth.” Aronofsky said the experience will blend narrative and documentary elements. The 10,000-seat Sphere will feature a “16K x 16K” wraparound screen to generate an immersive experience, while its proprietary “Sphere Immersive Sound” system employs audio technology like beamforming to support custom auditory experiences. Certain seats will also be equipped with haptic experiences so guests can “feel” the narrative. “At its best, cinema is an immersive medium that transports the audience out of their regular life, whether that's into fantasy and escapism, another place and time, or another person's subjective experience. The Sphere is an attempt to dial up that immersion,” Aronofsky noted.
