The campground of the Bonnaroo music festival has a women-only space, as part of an initiative to create safer, more responsive areas for women while cultivating meaningful connections with fans. Camp SheRoo combines celebration and meditation, admitting women, women-identifying individuals, and non-binary festival-goers. The fenced-in sanctuary lets attendees explore new sides of themselves without fear of judgment or unwanted advances. "In order for these conversations to happen, women need to gather in a space where they feel comfortable talking about it in a very real way," says SheRoo lead producer Laura Wise. Despite mounting evidence of sexual harassment and violence at such events, many musicians and venues lack a response policy. In addition to SheRoo, Bonnaroo is for the second year working with Calling All Crows, a service and activism-focused organization that works with musicians to implement change.
