Ecozoic Resources promotes sustainability by supplying large-scale events like Burning Man with a regenerative Biofiltration toilet that offers what co-founder Kelly Erhart calls a closed-loop process. The product treats, separates and dehydrates waste within the tanks for future use. "At the end of the event, we have this amazing liquid fertilizer that is totally clean and can be used to rebuild soil house," Erhart says. "A lot of times we’ll partner with farmers in the local area and get a permit to land apply on their land." The Ecozoic toilets do not require pumping or trucking waste during events and can store 10 times the volume of typical portable toilets — and the interior is lighted and odor-free, with a fan. Erhart also says users treat the Ecozoic toilets with an unusual level of respect compared to standard portable latrines. "Another part of our mission is trying to spread awareness around the multilayered benefits and how we can look at the economics in a different way," she notes.
