Filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola and the Grateful Dead headline this year’s crop of Kennedy Center Honors recipients. Both will be honored on Dec. 8 at Washington, D.C.'s John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for lifetime achievement in the arts, along with blues legend Bonnie Raitt, jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, and the legendary Harlem theater The Apollo. Observers note that it is extremely rare for the Kennedy Center Honors to choose a venue instead of another performer. The Apollo’s nine-decade run as an incubator for generations of Black talent, though, qualified it as an exception. The 47th Kennedy Center ceremony will air on CBS on Dec. 23.
