First Look at Munich's New Climate-Neutral 20,000-Cap Arena
Pollstar (05/20/22) Gottfried, Gideon
The plans for Germany's first climate-neutral, multipurpose event arena, to be built at Munich Airport with a 20,000-person cap, have been cleared by the Munich city council. The $316 million multi-use concert and convention center (MUCcc) is managed by SWMunich Real Estate and will be designed by London-based architects Populous. "The developers are pursuing a concept that will set new quality benchmarks of external architecture and interior design (acoustics, sight lines, equipment, and hospitality) as well as the important aspects of sustainability, transportation, and the environment," reads a press release. The parties behind MUCcc say their aim is "to achieve climate neutrality." To that purpose, the carbon footprint is be reduced before and during construction, while the climate-positive management is supposed to continue once the arena is up and running. SWMunich thinks the venue will enhance the cultural value of the region, as well as boost tourism and the local economy. "The arena will help to make the Munich metropolitan region and the state of Bavaria future-proof and internationally competitive in the event sector," said SWMunich director Gert Waltenbauer.
