The European Consumer Organization (BEUC) and member groups last week rolled out a campaign to protect Europeans from predatory online ticket resellers. "Buying a ticket for an event from an unauthorized online reseller is risky and can be very costly," warned BEUC's Monique Goyens. The organization recommends consumers purchase tickets from the event's ticket office or from an authorized reseller who maintains the official price. Goyens said sellers resorting to unfair practices often work across the European Union (EU), and she called on member states to work together to ensure adherence to consumer law. The BEUC campaign was launched with member organizations based in the Czech Republic, Spain, Finland, Slovakia, Poland, Belgium, Slovenia, and Switzerland, which is not in the EU. According to BEUC, Belgium and Denmark prohibit resales of tickets at higher than face value, but other EU countries lack such protections.
