Coronavirus: European Countries Further Relax Restrictions

A handful of European countries including Italy and Spain further relaxed their coronavirus lockdown restrictions on May 18. Most businesses in Italy, including restaurants, bars, cafes, and hairdressers, are reopening after more than two months of quarantine. However, social distancing measures are still in effect. Meanwhile, Spain has slightly loosened restrictions on some of its least affected islands. These decisions follow consistent declines in the number of daily recorded deaths, with Italy posting the fewest daily deaths since its lockdown was enacted in March. Spain also reported the daily death toll falling below 100 for the first time since imposing its own lockdown. Still, officials are warning against allowing complacency to set in, or a second wave of infections could follow.
