The annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts festival opened Friday, April 12, with an anticipated attendance of nearly 200,000 fans over two weekends. That amounts to roughly 80% of the 250,000 tickets that were made available for purchase this year. Sources close to the festival say the sales dip is not as bad as many had predicted. They also point out that Coachella remains the most-attended and highest-grossing annual festival in North America, topping Austin City Limits and the Electric Daisy Carnival at the Las Vegas Speedway. Meanwhile, a number of popular festivals set for this year's second quarter — most notably New Orleans’ JazzFest and Daytona Beach's Welcome to Rockville festival — have not sold out of tickets either. Other popular events later in the year, including the Governors Ball in New York (June 7-9) and Lollapalooza (Aug 1-4), which used to sell out days after going on sale, have yet to sell out, too.
