The U.K. Association of Independent Festivals has detailed the 2019 edition of its November Festival Congress event in Sheffield, intended to be the first travel carbon-neutral events industry conference. The confirmed speaker lineup includes rock photographer Jill Furmanovsky in conversation with ILMC managing director Greg Parmley. Also scheduled to speak is Rewilding Britain CEO Rebecca Wrigley, and Sensoria Festival founder Jo Wingate. Wingate will discuss her organization's immersive screening of the film "Metropolis" with a live score from Factory Floor at a former steel mill. The Independent Festival Awards will follow the two-day concert, and panels and workshops are to include a headline debate concerning the definition of "independence" in the current festival climate, a vision for a sustainable industry, festival funding, apps and the ethical considerations of data collection. The Congress will work with Energy Revolution to balance the carbon emissions from travel for all speakers and staffers, with investment in projects that generate clean renewable energy. Delegates also will be presented with the option to balance their travel emissions with a contribution at point of ticket sale, with all donations directly funneled to renewable energy projects.
