K-pop megastars, BTS, are back following a nearly four-year hiatus to complete their military service with a new album and a world tour that could rival Taylor Swift’s record-breaking Eras Tour in terms of earnings. Approximately 260,000 fans headed to Seoul’s Gwanghwamun Square for the free "BTS The Comeback Live | Arirang" show on March 21, marking the start of an 82-date world tour that will span five continents. The free concert alone reportedly generated a nearly US$177 million economic impact for Seoul, according to a Bloomberg analysis of spending on flights, lodgings, food, merchandise and other revenue. The phenomenon mirrors the economic surges registered in cities worldwide during the Eras Tour. According to Bloomberg researchers, expected revenue from ticket and merchandising sales from the confirmed tour dates alone could generate over US$800 million. If BTS and their management agency Hybe Co. extend the 82-show run, Swift's total earnings record — $2.2 billion from 149 shows — could indeed be broken.
