The National Football League (NFL) certainly doesn’t need to offer major game-day promotions and fan merchandise giveaways at the door. Overall, NFL games average roughly 97-98% capacity across the entire league. Of course, actual attendance numbers can vary by game depending on how many season-ticket holders or corporate buyers re-sell or stay home. But, for the most part and in general, the seats are filled!
But where’s the fun in just putting on the games and cleaning up afterwards?
As the NFL and most teams have come to learn, football season is uniquely powerful from a marketing standpoint. Unlike most sports, football is a weekly ritual and not the daily, almost lifestyle structure of pro baseball, basketball, and hockey. Every Sunday is a social occasion. Every Monday and Thursday night is an event, certainly at the stadium and the tailgate lots.
Uniting the Home Crowd Faithful
That said, the pro football fans of 2026 demand more than just a seat and a hot dog. They want to be part of the action. The best stadium promotions have shifted from passive trinkets to active participation tools that can be wielded as psychological weapons against the opposing team that’s dared to invade the home team’s stadium.
Yeah, rally towels!
When thousands of fans wave custom rally towels in unison, it not only hulks up the “home field advantage,” but also triggers a collective dopamine hit. To this end, “Rally Rags” are superior to static items because they provide constant motion and energy and look great for the “I so want to be there!” fans watching at home.
Dan Miller, Director of Ticket Operations for Ticketstar, says, “I believe the best game-day giveaways are the ones that unite the crowd like a rally towel or a white-out T-shirt giveaway. My family has gotten the most use from a cowbell giveaway [courtesy of the Green Bay Gamblers hockey team]. My kids have taken it back to many games.” Miller’s organization works closely with the Green Bay Packers, but doesn't have a formal ticketing or promotional relationship with them.
This season, the New York Jets have counted among their promos a Pepsi white towel giveaway (Sept. 20 game vs. the Packers) and a Jet Blue green and white flag giveaway (Oct. 11 vs. the Cleveland Browns). The New York Giants will be taking home-field optics to a whole other level when they take on the Washington Commanders on Thursday Night Football Nov. 12 and giving out wearable light bands.
League Wide Theme Months
While items differ by stadium, all 32 NFL teams align their promotional calendars with league-wide initiatives during specific windows of the season. For instance, October is currently dubbed Crucial Catch. So, the various teams focus on cancer awareness-themed items, typically pink or multi-colored pennants and ribbons.
November will be Salute to Service, honoring the men and women who serve in the United States’ armed forces. Expect military appreciation themes, camouflage ribbons and camouflage knit beanies or caps. For instance, on Nov. 22 when the Giants face the Jaguars, the team will be handing out military knit beanies to the first 25,000 fans for Salute to Service.
December is to offer up My Cause, My Cleats. So, game-day fans will see an array of player charity awareness initiatives and custom cleat showcases. Finally, January (or Week 18) is Faithful/Fan Appreciation Week. On tap will be mass stadium giveaways like posters, calendars and/or team magnets.
Creative Promos
And then there are those NFL game day promotions in which the marketing department has truly thought “outside of the box.” One example is the Pittsburgh Steelers running a sweepstakes through Dec. 14 for one lucky fan to win an official black-and-gold wrapped 2026 F-150 SuperCrew XLT during the final regular-season home game.
Another example is the Los Angeles Rams. For their Sept. 21 home opener versus the Giants, the team handed out a 1951 World Championship commemorative beach towel. The Rams have also given out replica championship rings presented by Cedars Sinai and a Matthew Stafford MVP rally towel presented by Hyundai via special ticket packages
Dan August, Executive Vice President, Consumer Revenue and Strategy for the Rams, says, “The way we look at game-day gate giveaways is either to help with atmosphere [rally towels] or be something that people can use or would want to buy [e.g., beach towels, bobbleheads). For the items they would want, we can either go premium to drive ticket sales and STM attendance, like we did with the Super Bowl ring this year, or we can go lower priced to just make people happy with an item they want to keep.”
Timeliness also factors into the mix. For the Chicago Bears home game against the New England Patriots on Oct. 22, the team handed out fake mustaches and Mike Ditka-inspired knit headbands to the first 10,000 fans at Soldier Field in honor of the recently deceased legendary coach.
Toni Manzella, Director of Ticketing at Soldier Field, says, “Mike Ditka was a true Chicago Bears legend. What he means to the City of Chicago and Bears fans all across the country is immeasurable. His loss was felt near and far, but his legacy will live on forever. We will never stop seeing fans showing up to the games with mustaches and sunglasses — and there was no better way to honor an icon!”
Moving Forward
We all now exist in the social media age, and the NFL is certainly no exception. Every promotional item a team hands out to their fans should be done so with “Instagrammable” moments in mind – visuals that look great through a smartphone lens that spread the team’s brand across the globe in seconds and result in thousands of free impressions.
But don’t forget the fun factor. It’s not all about what will look great on Facebook and also translate perfectly to 4K stadium screens. Amy Matlin, Senior Director of Ticketing for the Giants, concludes, “In my opinion, the best giveaways are something that incorporates the history and tradition of the team. Recently it’s been bobbleheads of past legends. It’s a collector’s item and because it’s limited, it encourages early entry to the game. It also invites long-time season ticket members to share their stories of the player or coach with family members and, of course, those around their seats.”
