Ticketmaster recently announced that it is set to launch a fan-to-fan exchange website that should thwart ticket scalpers "within days," by allowing customers to buy or resell tickets for gigs, shows and sporting events at face value or less. Fair ticketing advocates are cautiously hopeful, with FanFair Alliance's Adam Webb noting, "The secondary market has been failing fans for years and there is a real opportunity to rebuild it in a consumer-friendly direction and to lock out industrial-scale touts." However, proponents are still dissatisfied that Ticketmaster is not making a better effort to foil scalpers by using technology that locks tickets sold on its primary site to mobile phones to stop them being resold anywhere other than the exchange. "If Ticketmaster set up new systems that allow touts to buy tickets then move them along to other secondary sites, this would be the biggest missed opportunity in ticketing history," says Reg Walker with the Iridium Consultancy.
