The incidence of ticketing fraud in the U.K. has increased, accompanied by a decline in the average value loss per victim, according to the latest numbers from the Society of Ticket Agents & Retailers (STAR). Action Fraud received 3,973 fraud reports with a median loss per victim of $264 in the six months leading up to October 2017, versus 2,885 reports with a median loss per victim of $278 during the same period in 2015. "Sadly, customers are continuing to fall prey to deliberate fraudsters and therefore need to know exactly where they should purchase tickets from safely," says STAR chairman Adrian Sanders. "Despite the considerable advances in ticket fraud prevention, some customers are still too easily being tricked." June and July saw the highest concentration of ticketing fraud reported to the police. The mean average loss per victim was $550 in June and $626 in July, and the median loss was $331 and $372, respectively. "Whether people are buying tickets for the theater, a festival, a concert, or a sports event, they need to remain vigilant and be aware that there are fraudsters all over the globe trying to make money out of people's desire to buy tickets quickly and easily online," notes Dave Clark with the City of London Police. "If a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is."
